Provincelands Dune Shack Field Trip

Students from Studio Art and Photography classes recently had the unique opportunity to visit a dune shack in Provincetown.  The day began with a picturesque hike through the dunes to the Ray Wells shack.  There, the students had the opportunity to use the water pump, explore the interior and exterior of the shack, as well as hear a brief history of the shacks from guide, Mrs. Lise Neilson.

 From 1872-1923 the Life Saving Service patrolled the beaches looking for shipwrecks.

The surf men wanted to bring their families out to spend time in the dunes when they were not working, so they built small ,one room shacks with  scrap wood, found washed up on shore from ship wrecks.

Research through the Massachusetts Historical Commission led to the shacks being eligible for listing in the National Register of Historical Places. They now are protected, owned and managed  by the Cape Cod National Seashore.

This trip was an incredible opportunity for the students; most of them had never been out there or knew anything about them. 

All students will be creating artwork based on their sketches and photos from the trip with a public show to follow, stay tuned for details.

 

Fine and Applied Arts Nights

May 20-23 Nauset held its annual Fine and Applied Arts Nights.  This phenomenal event showcased the work of visual and performing artists from throughout the school year.  Work featured included: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, metals art, jewelry, guitar building, woodworking and fashion design, as well as performances from concert band, jazz band, chorus and orchestra as well as a fashion show.
The three night even was kicked off with an Artists reception that included treats from the culinary classes and a runway fashion show.  Our new gallery space was highlighted and work through the entire space was impressive to all.
Our students continue to amaze us everyday!

Marine Art Contest

The annual Massachusetts Marine Educators K-12 Marine Art Contest is now underway.  Deadline is May 2, 2014. Theme is "Amazing Ocean Creatures of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary."  Nauset art students from Studio Art and Honors Portfolio classes participated this year with outstanding work!

Fine and Applied Arts Nights!!!

                                                    THE event of the season is coming up!
 Nauset's Fine and Applied Arts Nights is the opportunity for the visual and performing arts department to share their work from throughout the year.  It is a three night event this year, being kicked off with a Fashion Show and artist's reception on May 20th at 5:30 PM. 
Featured work includes: drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, woodworking, art metal and jewelry, textile and digital arts, as well as demonstrations and performances from the jazz and concert band and chorus.
It is an event not to be missed!

Project: HOPE

Art Project HOPE is a program that consists of high school art students across the Cape adopting a large canvas and creating their collective vision of hope for the Child and Family Services Program in Hyannis.
It has been said it takes village to raise a child and the program was looking for a creative way to bring the Cape communities together and support those who are navigating their mental health journey.
There are nine participating schools: Nauset, Monomoy, DY, Barnstable, Pope John Paul II, Sandwich, Southeast Alternative, Mashpee and Falmouth.
Nauset artists Connie LaMotte and Diana Jeronimo collaborated on the piece that will be on display for the opening reception May 5th at 5 PM in the Hallway of Hope at the Hyannis Child and Family Services office (1019 Iyannough Rd). 
"Our idea behind this piece was to have the background be colorful and bright to make the viewer fell uplifted.  The piece is dominated by abstract images of color and on top is a silhouette of someone holding an umbrella for another person.  The silhouette depicts kindness, hopefulness and friendship." - Connie and Diana
