Cape Cod National Seashore "An Era Exposed"
Cape
Cod National Seashore to Host “An Era
Exposed”
Exhibit
by Nauset Regional High School Honors Portfolio, Printmaking, and Photography
Classes
Cape Cod National Seashore’s Parks as Classrooms Education Program and the Nauset Regional High
School Art Department recently collaborated on an education program designed to
introduce honors portfolio, printmaking, and photography students to the
national seashore’s historic buildings, and to inspire the creation of art
based on these cultural properties. Works from this collaboration will be on
display at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham between November 3 and 25,
2014. There will be an artist reception Tuesday, November 4 from 1:30 to 2:30
PM.
Students in Mrs. Ogden’s Honors Portfolio and Printmaking
classes, and Mrs. Campbell’s Photography classes visited the Atwood Higgins
property in Wellfleet in September. Following an educational presentation by a
park ranger, they investigated the architecture of the property’s many
buildings to gain inspiration for their art. The photography students shot the
wide range of available textures, while the portfolio students sketched on site
and then returned to class to complete their interior and exterior work, using
a medium of their choice.
Also being showcased in the November exhibition are works derived
from field trips to the Ray Wells and Zara’s dune shacks in the Province Lands.
Works by printmaking students feature white line woodblocks and dry point etchings,
while photographs emphasize textural details. The dune dwellings are part of a
National Register historic district which derives part of its historic value
from its association with the development of art and literature in America,
making it a perfect educational venue for local art students.

Serti Silk Painting
Studio Art class has been working on Serti Silk Painting.
Ancient coloring and resist techniques were developed to embellish the woven cloth of silk and cotton that came from India and China. The wax resist or batik techniques of India have been documented back to the 2nd century A.D. The Serti technique is the silk painting technique
where designs are outlined with gutta
or water-based resists, which are applied to silk that has been pre-washed,
dried and stretched. Once the gutta resist has dried, it acts
as a barrier for the dye or paint—keeping the color within the outlined areas
of the design and allowing you to achieve defined areas. We paint with bamboo Sumi brushes. After the dye or paint
has been properly set, the clear gutta or resist is removed and a defining line
the color of the original fabric remains.

Provincelands Dune Shack Field Trip
Students from Studio Art and Photography classes recently had the unique opportunity to visit a dune shack in Provincetown. The day began with a picturesque hike through the dunes to the Ray Wells shack. There, the students had the opportunity to use the water pump, explore the interior and exterior of the shack, as well as hear a brief history of the shacks from guide, Mrs. Lise Neilson.
From 1872-1923 the Life Saving Service patrolled the beaches looking for shipwrecks.
The surf men wanted to bring their families out to spend time in the dunes when they were not working, so they built small ,one room shacks with scrap wood, found washed up on shore from ship wrecks.
Research through the Massachusetts Historical Commission led to the shacks being eligible for listing in the National Register of Historical Places. They now are protected, owned and managed by the Cape Cod National Seashore.
This trip was an incredible opportunity for the students; most of them had never been out there or knew anything about them.
All students will be creating artwork based on their sketches and photos from the trip with a public show to follow, stay tuned for details.

Project: HOPE
Art Project HOPE is a program that consists of high school art students across the Cape adopting a large canvas and creating their collective vision of hope for the Child and Family Services Program in Hyannis.
It has been said it takes village to raise a child and the program was looking for a creative way to bring the Cape communities together and support those who are navigating their mental health journey.
There are nine participating schools: Nauset, Monomoy, DY, Barnstable, Pope John Paul II, Sandwich, Southeast Alternative, Mashpee and Falmouth.
Nauset artists Connie LaMotte and Diana Jeronimo collaborated on the piece that will be on display for the opening reception May 5th at 5 PM in the Hallway of Hope at the Hyannis Child and Family Services office (1019 Iyannough Rd).
"Our idea behind this piece was to have the background be colorful and bright to make the viewer fell uplifted. The piece is dominated by abstract images of color and on top is a silhouette of someone holding an umbrella for another person. The silhouette depicts kindness, hopefulness and friendship." - Connie and Diana

Making Change: Art$ Challenge
Honors Portfolio, Studio Art II and Jewelry classes collaborated to take on an interesting challenege this year.
Each day, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston shreds approximetly $10 million worth of worn out curentcy. Approximetly 314 tons of currency is recycled by the Boston Fed each year. The recycled shreds are shipped to a farm to be composted, which will then be used to soil amendment to grow hay.
As part of the Federal Reserve's Centennial commemoration, the Boston Fed has invited high school students to repurpose the shredded cash to create a work of art. The theme of the challenge is "Making Change." Students were asked to use the cash shreds to create a piece of art showing change over the years.
Our students at NRHS created some highly original and beautiful pieces.

Culinary Breakfast Challenge
Each semester Ms. Anderson's Culinary I classes partake in a Culinary Challenge. The most recent challenge was to create a healthy breakfast. Students work in teams and spend a few classes coming up with their menus and grocery lists. On Thursday March 27th, the kitchen was buzzing with excitement as the students scurried to complete their meals in the one hour time frame. In addition to creating a healthy start to the day, students had to consider plate presentation as well as set the tables and serve their guest judges. Teams were scored based on teamwork, organization, cleanup, recipe accuracy, healthy menu choices, execution and presentation. The winning team receives gift cards for local businesses. The meals were impressive and delicious.

Decks for Kev
Nauset Senior and Wellfleet local Kevin Fitzgerald passed away this past December after a long, hard fought battle with leukemia. Kevin was a fun-loving, thrill seeker, who loved extreme sports. Skateboarding was Fitzgerald's favorite sport by far; he was one of the best skaters Wellfleet has ever seen.
Several Nauset students are participating in a fundraiser called "Decks For Kev." Artists across the country are designing skate decks in honor of Kevin to be auctioned online through the Facebook page "Decks For Kev." Bidding will begin in April online; all funds will benefit the Fitzgerald family. This fundraiser is a great way to support emerging artists, assist the Fitzgerald family, and simply show some love for one of Wellfleet's finest.
